How to Use This Book¶
Two ways to read
Read straight through for the full story, or jump to the chapter you need. Every chapter lists its prerequisites at the top, so you'll know what to read first.
How a chapter works¶
Every chapter follows the same pattern, so you always know where to look.
| Section | What it does |
|---|---|
| Summary, Concepts, Prerequisites | What you'll learn and what to read first |
| The hook | A real-world story, often about Riya (who has Crohn's disease) or Sam (who has IBS and test anxiety) |
| Core science | The neuroscience, starting with an everyday comparison before the technical words |
| Hype Meter cards | Grades on popular claims: Strong, Moderate, Preliminary, or Hype (how it works) |
| How to read a gut-brain claim | Six questions applied to one real study |
| For families / If you're going through this | Practical notes for loved ones and for teens with the condition |
| MicroSim | An interactive simulation, plus a box on what the model leaves out |
| At the Bedside | A fictional case from symptoms to mechanism, including the mind-body side |
| Common Misconceptions | Myths and their corrections |
| Your Gut Check | Grade a claim, reason through three scenarios, and read real data |
| Exercises | 12 questions across Bloom's Taxonomy, from Remember to Create |
| Key Takeaways and Quiz | A summary and a 10-question self-check with explanations |
For students¶
- Read the hook and the everyday comparison first. They make the hard parts easier.
- Play with the MicroSim before and after reading the section it belongs to.
- Try every Your Gut Check question before opening the answer.
- Take the quiz. If you miss a question, the explanation names the concept it tested so you can go back and review it.
- Use the glossary and the learning graph when a term is unfamiliar.
For teens living with a gut condition¶
Read at your own pace. The If you're going through this boxes are written for you. Bring questions to your care team; the printable Questions to Ask Your Doctor can help. This book explains the science; it can't tell you what's right for your body.
For families¶
Start with For Families, then read the chapter that matches your teen's condition.
For teachers and clubs¶
See For Teachers, the Teacher Guide, and the Club Kit. Every MicroSim page has a lesson plan and an embed code. The PDF downloads work for printing.
Accessibility¶
The book works on phones and tablets, supports dark mode (the toggle at the top of the page), and every simulation includes a text description for screen readers. If something doesn't work for you, please tell me.
