Film Industries Map and Cricket Basics

Run the Film Industries MicroSim Fullscreen

About This MicroSim

This MicroSim has two tabs.

Film industries. Eleven colored tiles sit roughly where South Asia's language-based film industries are centered: Urdu and Punjabi (Lahore and Karachi, Pakistan), Nepali (Kathmandu), Dzongkha (Thimphu, Bhutan), Hindi (Bollywood, Mumbai), Bengali (Kolkata), Bangla (Dhaka, Bangladesh), Telugu (Hyderabad), Kannada (Bengaluru), Tamil (Chennai), Malayalam (Kerala) and Sinhala and Tamil (Sri Lanka). Click or tap a tile to see the language, the center, a landmark film or figure with its year, and a short note. The Hindi tile, Bollywood, is just one of eleven. The map is schematic, not to scale, and draws no borders.

Cricket: one over. A simple cricket field shows the bowler, the batter and the 22-yard (20.12 m) pitch. Press Start to watch one over: a single, a dot ball, a four, a wide (1 extra run that does not count as a ball), two runs, a wicket and a six. The scoreboard adds up the runs and counts legal balls, ending at 14 runs for 1 wicket from 6 legal balls. The over starts paused.

How to Use

  1. On the film tab, click or tap every tile and read the panel. Count the languages and countries.
  2. Find the two tiles for Bengali-language film, one in Kolkata and one in Dhaka. Why might one language have two industries?
  3. Click Cricket: one over, then press Start.
  4. Watch the "Legal balls" counter. Pause after each delivery and predict the score before the next one.
  5. When the over ends, explain why there were seven deliveries but only six legal balls. Press Reset or Replay to watch again.

Learning Objective

Students will be able to explain that Bollywood is one of many language-based film industries in South Asia, and describe the basic structure of a cricket over (6 legal balls, with runs adding up and wides not counted).

Bloom level: Understand (explain, describe).

Lesson Plan

Grade level: 9-12 (media studies, world cultures, ethnic studies, physical education, or a South Asian student club meeting)

Duration: 20 minutes

Activity:

  1. (3 min) Students write down every South Asian film or film industry they can name. Most will write "Bollywood."
  2. (7 min) In pairs, students click all eleven film tiles and fill in a table: industry, language, country, one landmark with its year.
  3. (6 min) Students switch to the cricket tab, run the over, and keep their own scorecard on paper, ball by ball. They compare their totals with the scoreboard.
  4. (4 min) Discussion: Why is "Bollywood" a misleading name for all South Asian film? What surprised you about how cricket is scored?

Assessment questions:

  1. Name three film industries other than Bollywood and the language each uses.
  2. Which two tiles use the same language, and in which two countries are they?
  3. How many legal balls are in an over?
  4. Why does a wide add a run but not count as a ball?
  5. A bowler bowls 4, dot, 1, wide, 6, 2, dot. How many runs were scored, and is the over finished?
